Social networking site Twitter announced Saturday that it is adding two new settings, enabling users to customise their usage experience by controlling what they view in their feed and what they get notified about.

Below are the main two feature updates being rolled out, as explained on an official Twitter blog post.

Notification control

From now on, users will be able to limit the notifications they receive to only those from the people they follow on Twitter’s website or mobile application.

This feature that can be turned on and off, so if users do not wish to limit notifications, they can simply choose to not turn it on, in which case they will receive notifications from everyone on Twitter, regardless of whether they follow them or not.

Managing notifications on Twitter has become much easier, as the notification controls can now be accessed directly from the notification tab.

Quality filter

Another feature that Twitter found could better its users’ experience is the so-called quality filter setting.

When it’s on, the filter improves the quality of the tweets a user sees on their news feed. This is done using a variety of signals, such as account origin and behaviour.

This move filters out “low-quality content”, such as duplicated and seemingly automated tweets, but does not remove content from accounts that the user follows or interacts with.

“We’ve designed the feature to learn and improve over time, so what we’re rolling out is just a start and we’ll keep you posted on updates in the future,” the blog post concluded.

Curbing crime

Twitter has been called on to make efforts to curb harassment and abusive interactions on its platform.

Recently, Leslie Jones, the star of the Ghostbusters reboot, and her supporters, requested Twitter to improve its system to eliminate or at least control hateful and racist messages that she has been receiving.

Twitter has also been trying to catch up with other popular social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook, as its new-user measurements have been dropping.

The number of average monthly active users on Twitter for the second quarter of the year increased by only three per cent, compared with the same period last year. The company’s price per share has been dropping as well.
